Q&A with Don Gibson

Tell us about a day in the life at Lumetrics.
A lot of my day is focused on our transparent armor measurement contract for the Army. I specify components, design configurations for interferometers, and work on every custom optical measurement project. A customer will come with a measurement problem that hasn’t been solved before, I come up with a solution. I have the best job here.

I started with Lumetrics in 2008 as an intern while still in college at the University of Rochester. These days, I spend the bulk of my day working in the lab. I also support our product lines like Lumos and OptiGauge and meet to discuss new applications.

I was heavily involved in the launch of wavefront sensors. We introduced the wavefront sensors line in 2013 and are about to introduce new capabilities.

What kind of measurement challenges are keeping you busy right now?

We are pushing the envelope on exotic materials and new wavelengths. The OptiGauge MIR was an interesting project. We are currently measuring samples for the characterization of transparent armor. Any new technology, new light source, is really cool.

What technologies are you researching or tracking these days?

I’m tracking the development of supercontinuum light sources, broadband white light sources that are super high-powered and very expensive. As the technology develops and price comes down, it will open up new technologies if it does. It’s a core enabling technology in Lumos, but will advance a lot of measurement solutions as costs drop.
