Blow Molding Measurement

Lumetrics, Inc. designed a custom fixture for a major consumer goods company that had a need to measure a plastic extrusion tube as part of the blow molding process. The intent of the system was to better understand the process, and to reduce the amount of resin used in plastic bottles made during the blow molding operation.   A system was designed with probes positioned outside the blow molding form so that multiple measurements could be taken of the tube in the few seconds the mold was open.  To do this, probes had to be designed that sat two feet away from a ¼ “ diameter tube and were still able to obtain multiple tube wall thickness measurements in a few seconds.  As a result of Lumetrics’ newly integrated technology, the client was able to study their blow molding process and they expect to see dramatic resin savings across their product lines.
